What are the different types of blind flanges available

2023-11-04

There are several different types of blind flanges available, each designed to suit specific applications and requirements. The main types of blind flanges include:

1. Raised Face Blind Flange: This is the most common type of blind flange. It has a raised ring or face around the bolt holes, which helps create a better seal and provides a surface for gaskets. Raised face blind flanges are used in a wide range of applications.

2. Flat Face Blind Flange: Flat face blind flanges have a flat surface around the bolt holes without a raised portion. They are used when the mating flange or surface is also flat and does not require a raised face for sealing.

3. Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Blind Flange: RTJ blind flanges are designed for high-pressure and high-temperature applications. They have a groove for a metallic ring gasket, which ensures a reliable and leak-proof seal in extreme conditions.

4. Threaded Blind Flange: Threaded blind flanges have internal threads to connect to pipes or other components with external threads. They are commonly used in low-pressure applications.

5. Lapped Joint Blind Flange: Lapped joint blind flanges are used in combination with stub ends or lap joint flanges. They allow for easy disassembly and are often used in systems that require frequent maintenance or reconfiguration.

6. Spectacle Blind Flange: Spectacle blind flanges are unique because they consist of two metal discs with a hole in one and a solid plate on the other. They are used to switch between an open and closed position and are often employed for maintenance, cleaning, or to change the direction of flow.

7. Paddle Blind Flange: Paddle blind flanges are used to block or divert the flow within a pipeline. They have a solid plate with an opening that can be rotated to block or allow the flow. They are often used in process control applications.

8. Male and Female Blind Flange: Male and female blind flanges are designed to be used together. The male flange has a raised face and the female flange has a matching recess. When bolted together, they create a sealed connection.

9. Weld Neck Blind Flange: These are less common but have a weld neck on one side, which allows them to be butt-welded to a pipe or vessel. The other side is used for closure.

The choice of blind flange type depends on the specific requirements of the application, including pressure, temperature, and sealing needs. Each type of blind flange offers distinct advantages and may be selected based on the design and operational considerations of the piping system.
