Types and Characteristics of Hydraulic Cylinders

2025-07-22

Hydraulic cylinders are very common in construction machinery, but many people cannot tell the difference between them. Let me tell you about the most common types and their characteristics.

Single-acting hydraulic cylinders are the simplest, just like a syringe for injections, which can only output force in one direction. It is pushed in by hydraulic oil and rebounded by springs or deadweight. This type is cheap and easy to repair, suitable for simple occasions such as sliding doors and lifting platforms. The disadvantage is that the power is not strong enough and the stroke is also limited.

Double-acting hydraulic cylinders are much more advanced, and oil can be fed from both ends, so you can push or pull as you want. This type is used in the bucket of the excavator and the outriggers of the crane. It is powerful and stable, but the structure is a bit complicated and the price is also more expensive.

Multi-stage hydraulic cylinders are particularly interesting, and can be stretched very long like a telescope. Fire truck ladders and dump truck cargo boxes all use it. Although it can be stretched long, special attention should be paid to the strength of each cylinder section, as it is easy to leak oil after long use.

Swing hydraulic cylinders are not very common. They do not move linearly but rotate to work. For example, the rotating platform of the excavator and the steering gear of the ship use this. The speed and torque must be matched well, otherwise it is easy to get stuck.

Choose a hydraulic cylinder based on actual needs, don't just pursue expensive ones. The working environment, load size, and travel distance must all be considered. Remember to check the seals regularly and keep the hydraulic oil clean so that the life can be long.
